Scève, Maurice

Scève, Maurice
(1501-1564)
   scholar, poet
Born in lyon, where he was, like pontus de tyard and sébillet, a member of the Lyonnais school, Maurice Scève, a friend of clément marot (after 1536), took part in the Barbe festivals, poetic celebrations dedicated to the veneration of the relics of St. Ann, for which he wrote two works praising the feminine ideal. His collection, Délie, objet de plus haute vertu (1544), composed of verses in decasyl-lables, is a work of lyric praises of beloved women and mystical symbols ("Délie" is the anagram for idéel—"ideal"). In Microcosme (1562), a biblical epic of 3,003 elaborately constructed verses, Scève describes the human as a microcosm of the universe. He also did verse translations of Psalms 26 and 83 from the Vulgate (1542). An avid reader of Petrarch and Sannazaro, Scève was highly regarded by the symbolists of the 20th century.
